Temptation and Orientation

What is temptation? Anything that offers to humans an opportunity to sin. Consequently, it is an important psychological category within a Christian framework. To use behavioral terminology, it is a kind of stimulus. But we need better theoretical resources than behaviorism offers, because temptation is more than a generic stimulus, since it comes morally contextualized, loaded with potential negative ethical and spiritual significance. Perhaps we could define temptation as an evil ethicospiritual stimulus that provides an opportunity for sin.

Temptation is an important concept in Scripture and the Christian tradition (see Owen, 1965). In the Bible, from the divine side, temptation has the connotation of "testing," for God allows it in order to strengthen the faith and virtue of believers. On the other hand, from the side of Satan, it has more the idea of "seducing" humans to sin (Lewis, 1995). Temptation can lead to sin when the tempted person succumbs to it and commits a deed contrary to God's norms. The Bible opens with the story of the first temptation, by which Adam and Even disobeyed God's sole prohibition, and became sinners. This narrative indicates that humans were placed by God in an environment where they would be exposed to temptation. Now, after the Fall, humans exist in a permanent state of temptation. In profound contrast to the rest of humanity, Jesus Christ successfully resisted the temptations, he faced when he lived on earth, being "perfected" by them. (Heb 5:8,9), and now he is able to aid believers in their temptations (Heb 4:15,16).

For soul-care purposes, one of most important things for us to remember is that it is not sinful to be tempted. It opens the opportunity to sin but is not itself sin. This follows necessarily from the life of Christ who was "tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin" (Heb 4:15). This point is especially important for people to keep in mind when they are struggling with temptation.

Most often we think of temptation as external and coming from outside of us, whether through Satan or the "world": someone cuts us off in traffic, we get criticized by our spouse, or we see a hotel advertisement for an erotic movie. But all believers also face another class of temptations: internal temptations, due to our flesh (Gal 5:17-21) or indwelling sin (Ro 7:14-24). Perhaps one of the greatest kinds of suffering imaginable is to be faced with an ongoing, indwelling temptation for years. This is the situation that many of our brothers and sisters face who struggle with same-sex attraction.
Except for those who reject and distort its meaning, the Bible's teaching on homosexuality as sin is clear (Ro 1:26,27; 1Co 6:9; 1Ti 1:10; see Gagnon, 2001).

However, the Bible does not directly address the issue of how to understand same-sex attraction. When a person experiences sexual attraction to persons of the same sex, something disordered has occurred in the region of the brain known as the hypothalamus, where sexual arousal is initiated. Sexual arousal is a physiological state; it cannot be created out of nothing - no one experiences sexual attraction to trees. Consequently, it makes good Christian sense to regard the condition of same-sex attraction as a biologically-based state of temptation that is related to our fallen condition.

What are the benefits of this recognition? First, it is important for those with same-sex attraction to know that simply experiencing it is NOT itself a sin. It becomes an immoral deed only when one succumbs to it in imaginative action or actual behavior. Rather, same-sex attraction may be better understood as simply evidence of one’s falleness and indwelling sin–indicative of our common human condition and warranting earnest prayer and fresh cleansing–and therefore analogous to any internal temptation. But so long as one doesn't act on those temptations, one is not committing sin. Second, those without such temptations ought to be extremely sympathetic to the plight of those who struggle with them. What an enormous challenge to have to face such temptation over a prolonged period of time!

The recently published research by Jones; Yarhouse (2007) should come then as encouragement for such believers, for it documents that over time Christians have experienced an undermining of the power of such temptation. They followed 98 persons involved in an ex-gay Christian ministry for as long as three years and found that over a third experienced a "dramatic change in lessening their homosexual orientation" (p. 325), while less than a third experienced no improvement, with the rest somewhere in-between. As the authors point out, such results would be considered positive in research on psychotherapy outcomes, but it is important to note that this research was not done on those involved in psychotherapy, but were simply in an ex-gay ministry.

This study is momentous and ought to provide real encouragement for those experiencing same-sex attraction, but it also points to the slow and uneven nature of change with this condition, and therefore the long-term struggle faced by many of those afflicted with this tragic temptation. May God grant them increasing grace in their pursuit of His holiness and wholeness.

What does Bible say about Suicide

People talk about suicide like it's a secret that you can't share with anyone. Suicide is whispered amongst friends and family members, and when someone engages in a suicidal act, the only question on everyone's lips is, "Why?". The answer is well-understood by mental health professionals , the answer is depression.

Each soul is very precious to God. Job said, In whose (God's) hand is the soul of every living thing... (Job 12:10). God creates each human soul to give us an opportunity to learn of God, keep his commandments, and put on immortality.

Only God can judge the spiritual condition of a soul and know his/her final decisions (Pro.29:26, Psa.75:7).

There are many people to whom God can show mercy (Psa.18:25). A person who has sought God during his/her life -- (e.g. by trying to do things righteously or to love others) may still be very troubled by thoughts or feelings of failure, hopelessness, or unloved.

These thoughts can be likened to a train, first comes the engine, then several cars, then the caboose. Suicide is the caboose of a train of thought. It comes after many other cars which carry messages such as,

I can never do anything right,

I might as well give up

They would be better off without me

Nobody ever pays me any attention, and I'll show them.

These ultimately lead to the thought which says Suicide is the way out ! .

How God Handled Different Suicide Attempts In The Bible ?

Scriptures teach us that thoughts and feelings are spirit (Joh.6:63; Gal.5:22; Eph.2:2; Jam.4:5).

God told Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand (Job 1:12). Satan did his dirty work and Job began to despair, wanting to die, even wishing that he had never even been born! (Job 3:3-13). Job expressed his evil thoughts and feelings, but he did not follow through on them, even when his wife suggested suicide as a way to get out of his misery (Job 2:9).

God knew Job had spoken without knowledge (Job 38:2) so God didn't turn his back on Job. God was longsuffering with Job's evil thoughts, and when Job finally discovered that it's satan tempting him to denounce God, God was able to bless him abundantly (Job 42:3,6,10,12).

Jonah was a prophet of God and God told him to speak to the people of Nineveh. Jonah was disobedient to God, choosing instead to get on a ship and travel in the opposite direction. Disobedience is caused by an evil spirit (Eph.2:2).

This spirit caused a condition of hell in Jonah's mind (he knew what God wanted him to do and did not do it, Jam.4:17). God sent a great storm and Jonah confessed he was the cause of the trouble. Jonah said, Cast me into the sea,(Jonah was attempting to commit suicide) knowing that if he died, this condition of hell in his mind would cease.

Some people will tell us that suicide condemns a soul to be lost forever, because God can't forgive you until you repent and you can't repent of suicide after you are dead. The story of Jonah shows God being merciful to him even before he repented. Jonah did not repent until after the fish had swallowed him, and he had time to think about his choices.

People who attempt suicide are often thinking along the same lines as Jonah ,This is hell, and the only way out I can see is to kill myself. Jonah was in hell while he was alive (read Jon.2:2) and wanted to die to get out of hell.

Hell can be a condition of torment in our mind while we are alive.

God does not automatically turn his back and write off the soul as lost forever just because he or she dies by way of suicide. Only God knows how much control the person had over the evil thoughts in his/her mind. If a soul commits suicide before coming to the full knowledge of the truth, God can have mercy on that soul and remember that soul (Ma1.3:16).

If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.

Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.

We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.

To fulfill the requirements of a sin one would have to be in one's right mind and fully know the seriousness of the sin. Often when people attempt to commit suicide they are swayed by other pressures real or imagined, often caught up in fear, perhaps under the sway of medications, maybe feeling threatened. There are any number of factors that could affect their culpability in such cases. I'm not sure that we should ever link suicide to something like eternal damnation. I believe our God is much more merciful and understanding than that.

Start New Life

The devil's plan is to get you to believe that things are hopeless and that you are helpless and that the answer is to give it all up....It is yet a lie.

You can be a totally different person ..By RENEWING your MIND !. Change your thoughts, and reach out to Jesus.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2)

Maybe it is GOD CALLING YOU to serve HIM instead of serving the world, which has you so miserable.

INSTEAD OF TAKING YOUR LIFE ... PERHAPS HE WANTS YOU TO USE THAT LIFE TO SERVE HIM.

Birth Control

Every married couple may not desire to have children. Some might wish to postpone the blessed event to a later time. For example, some couples find the adjustment to married life a difficult enough task without adding newborns into the equation. Others want children, but they prefer to space them out in time. There are several methods available to prevent the conception or birth of a child. Some are useful to the Christian, some are controversial, and some are sinful to use. While contraceptives are widely used and easily available, it does not mean that all methods are acceptable to God. True contraceptives are not sinful. A child does not exist before conception. If the ovum is not fertilized by the sperm, then no human life exists. Abortion kills that which has been conceived. Contraceptives prevent the conception of a life.

Before we progress further into our study, we need to define what is meant by birth control and contraceptives. A contraceptive is any method used to prevent the conception of a child. Contraceptives prevent the male sperm from uniting with the female’s ovum. Birth control is a broader term. It is any method used which prevents the birth of a child. A child might be conceived, but so long as it is not born, then its birth was controlled.

If it is wrong to murder a child after its birth, then it must also be wrong to murder a child before its birth.

For this reason abortion is wrong. It is a form of birth control. It does prevent the birth of a child. However, the killing of the child is a sin, even if the killing takes place before birth because the child is still a living human being.

Plants and animals grow naturally, but not in quantities sufficient to meet man’s needs. Hence, man creates artificial farms, vineyards, and flocks which meet with God’s approval (Genesis 4:2; 9:20; 47:3; Psalm 23; Matthew 13:3-8). The natural mode of transportation for man is walking, but God has approved the use of artificial transportation, such as ships. The use of contraceptives is simply another tool to control the course of nature for man’s needs and enjoyment. There are times when having children would not be wise. For example, when a wife is having health problems, when a couple is older and a pregnancy might risk the woman’s health or carry a high risk of producing a defective child, or when a couple is not financially able to support another child. Sexual intercourse is required in a marriage and avoiding sex simply to avoid having a child is not right.

Like all authorized activities the control of the production of children can be misused. However, because some misuse a right does not imply that a practice is inherently wrong. It is true that man is commanded to be fruitful and multiply, but that doesn’t imply that every couple is to have as many children as is possible. Every child given to a parent, whether planned or unplanned, should be loved and cared for, but nothing says a couple cannot limit the number of children that they will have.

Unfortunately, some so-called contraceptives may not prevent conception. Instead they terminate the life of the conceived child very early in its life. For example, the IUD is a molded piece of plastic that is inserted into the woman’s uterus. As the woman moves, it lightly bounces against the walls of the uterus. It does not cause any harm to the woman, but the mild irritation that it presents prevents a fertilized egg from implanting onto the walls of the uterus. The IUD does not prevent conception, but instead cause the child to be miscarried a few days after it was conceived. In other words, the IUD is a form of early abortion.

To compare the effectiveness of the various methods, a couple having regular sexual intercourse has an 85% chance of conceiving a child in a one year time frame.

Acceptable Forms of Contraception

Some clinics offer women a “morning-after” pill when they had engaged in sex, but do not want to become pregnant. These pills contain strong doses of hormones to force the shedding of the lining of the uterus, even if it is not their normal time of the month to menstruate. Without a lining, a fertilized egg cannot implant and grow. Again, this is not a contraceptive because a child may have been conceived. Instead, it is an abortive. Some “morning-after” pills are actually strong doses of the typical birth control pill that is popular among women. The intention of the birth control pill is to regulate a woman’s hormones so that ova are not released each month. These pills are only about 95% effective in preventing the release of an egg. To increase the pill’s effectiveness in controlling births, a second hormone is typically added to force the shedding of the lining of the uterus each month. Even if an egg is accidently released, the second hormone prevents it from attaching to the lining of the uterus. With the addition of the second hormone, the pill is 98% to 99% effective in preventing births. Not all birth control pills cause abortions, but since the contraceptive-only pills are rarely prescribed, the doctor and pharmacist should be carefully questioned as to how the particular brand of birth control pills they are purchasing actually work.

Condoms: There are two versions available today – one for the male and one for the female.

The male condom is a thin sleeve that is rolled over the man’s erect penis. Most condoms are made from latex so if either the husband or wife is allergic to latex, a non-latex condom, usually made of polyurethane must be used. Since the husband’s penis must be erect before the condom can be rolled over the penis, foreplay must be started and then briefly interrupt to put on the condom. Care must be used in putting on the condom to ensure that the end of the condom is not tight against the end of the penis. When the husband ejaculates, an area is needed to trap the semen. Otherwise, the end of the condom can swell and pop like a balloon – making the condom useless for preventing conception. Because the condom covers the glans and shaft of the penis, sexual pleasure from intercourse is reduced for the man. If a man is having difficulties delaying ejaculation, this might be a bonus, but many dislike the lacking of feeling that comes with the use of a condom. The condom must be removed shortly after ejaculation because the male penis becomes flaccid, reducing in size, and allowing the possibility of sperm spilling out of the condom and into the vagina.

The female condom is like a loose bag with a rim to keep the condom in place. It is typically made of polyurethane. The bulk of the bag is inserted into the vagina before intercourse takes place. This makes it difficult to use before the wife’s hymen is broken the first time she has sex. However, afterwards, it can be inserted whenever intercourse is planned, so foreplay does not have to be interrupted. Like the male condom, the female condom does decrease sexual pleasure, both for the husband and the wife.

Condoms made in the United States must have a sample failure rate of 7% or less. In other words, up to 7% of the condoms purchased fail. They may fail because of a small hole in the latex or they might tear during usage. There is also the possibility of the male condom being put on incorrectly. Since condoms are rolled on, they can roll back up and slip off. Polyurethane condoms are especially prone to slippage. They are also reported to break more easily than latex condoms. Since putting on a condom requires interrupting foreplay, there is a strong temptation to skip putting it on “just this one time.” In addition, newly married couples are curious as to what sex is like without the condom. More condoms actually fail from the lack of use than from manufacturer defects. Overall, 14% of couples using male condoms end up conceiving a child in one year and 21% of couples using female condoms end up conceiving a child in one year.

Diaphragm: The diaphragm is a soft, molded disk that blocks the end of the vagina so that sperm cannot get by it. Since the shape of each woman’s vagina varies greatly, a gynaecologist must make a mold for the diaphragm to be manufactured. It takes about two weeks to get a diaphragm after seeing the gynaecologist. In addition, to make the mold, the doctor will have to break the woman’s hymen if she has not had sex before. Some women find this preferable to having the pain of the hymen being broken on their wedding night.

Again, advance planning is required to insert the diaphragm before sexual intercourse, even though foreplay is not interrupted. Because it is possible for the diaphragm to slip out of place during intercourse, it is strongly recommended that a spermicide cream is used in addition to the diaphragm. Care must be taken in removing the diaphragm so that semen is not accidently spilled into the vagina. Like the condom, the diaphragm fails more often from the lack of use than from leakage around the edges. Twenty percent of couples using a diaphragm end up conceiving a child in one year.

Diaphragms do wear out, so they must be replaced every two years. In addition, if a woman becomes pregnant, the shape of vagina changes even after pregnancy, so she will need to be fitted with a new diaphragm.

Cervical Cap: The cervical cap is smaller than the diaphragm and is made of thicker material. The cap fits over the cervix and is held in place by suction. Like the diaphragm, it must be made to order by a gynaecologist. New caps need to be ordered each year and after a pregnancy. The cervical cap is not as effective after the birth of a child as it is before a pregnancy. As with the diaphragm, it needs to be used with a spermicide. The cap must be removed after intercourse and care must be taken not to allow semen to slip passed the cap. A woman who has never been pregnant has a 20% chance of conceiving a child in one year. A woman who has had children has a 40% chance of conceiving a child in one year using the cervical cap.

Sponge: This is a small sponge containing spermicide. It is moistened with water and then inserted into the vagina. It provides protection for up to 24 hours. It has been linked with increased yeast infections and toxic shock syndrome so it is not recommended by doctors in the United States. Using the sponge, there is a 20% chance of conceiving a child in one year before the first child is born. After having children, there is 40% chance of conceiving a child in one year.

Spermicides: These are creams, jellies, or foam inserted into the vagina before sexual intercourse. The creams or jellies contain chemicals which kill sperm. Some people are allegoric to the chemicals used. The use of spermicides has been linked to increased urinary tract infections in women. Since spermicides provide no physical barrier, care must be taken to completely cover the cervix. Failure depends on how well it is used. On average, couples using only spermicides have a 26% chance of conceiving a child in one year. However, conception rates can be as high as 50% in one year due to imperfect use of spermicides.

Rhythm method: Since an egg is only released once every 28 days, on average, and sperm survives in a woman’s body for six days, the goal of the various rhythm methods is to restrict sexual intercourse to the times of the month when a woman is least likely to become pregnant. The difficulty is that every woman’s menstrual cycle is not a precise 28 days. Many women’s cycle varies from month to month. It can be as short as 14 days or as long as 36 days. Athletic women and young women occasionally miss a period, which makes determining the next time of ovulation difficult. The greatest disadvantage of the various rhythm methods is refraining from sex for a period of about nine days each month. Even women find this difficult because a woman feels most sexy during the time her egg is released, which is precisely the time the couple is trying to avoid.

The simplest method is the calendar method. It works best if the woman’s blood flow comes at regular intervals. A woman releases an egg 14 days before the start of her next blood flow. If the wife can project when she believes her next period will start, then the couple not desiring children must refrain from intercourse from 20 days before her next period to 11 days before the next period. The extra three days is in case the egg is not released precisely on the projected day. On average, 20% of the couples using this method end up conceiving a child in a year.

A bit fancier is the Sympto-Thermal method. Here the wife takes her temperature each morning before she gets out of bed. She uses a very sensitive thermometer that records temperatures to a fraction of a degree. When her temperature rises a half degree and stays elevated for three days, she has just ovulated. After the three days, the couple can have sexual intercourse for seven days with little chance of conception happening. Of course, this limited time per month for sex is too limited for most couples. Some couples stretch the time to one week before the next projected rise in temperature. It increases the possibility of conceiving a bit, but most find it to be in an acceptable range. The advantage of monitoring the temperature is that it handles variations in the length of the menstrual cycle. On average 17% of the couples using this method conceive a child in one year. If the couple restricts themselves to intercourse only the week after ovulation, only 2% of the couples conceive a child in one year.

Combining a rhythm method with another form of contraceptive is a clever way to have a strong contraceptive approach and still enjoy unrestricted sex one week per month. The couple can still have sexual intercourse during the remainder of the month, they just have to use another contraceptive. It is possible to reach levels equal to or exceeding the use of the birth control pill.

Breast-feeding: Breast-feeding is called the most effective contraceptive method known to man. While a woman is nursing a child, she only has a 6% chance of becoming pregnant within one year. The hormones that stimulate milk production in a woman’s breast also interrupt a woman’s menstrual cycle. As the child begins to eat foods other than his mother’s milk, the odds of becoming pregnant increases.

Withdrawal: This method requires the man to withdraw his penis prior to ejaculating. However, when a man approaches the point of orgasm, it becomes increasingly difficult for a man to withdraw prior to ejaculating. In addition, the interruption of sexual intercourse just before orgasm greatly decreases the pleasures of sex. Since sperm can exist in the fluids from the Cowpar’s glands which drip during sexual arousal, there is still a small chance of pregnancy occurring. On average 19% of the couples using this method conceive a child in one year.

Since the desire for sex all the way to orgasm is strong, it is recommended combining the withdrawal method with the rhythm method. The couple has full, complete sex during the safe week and uses withdrawal through the remaining times of the month.

Sterilization: These methods close of the path of the sperm so they can never reach the egg. Once performed, these methods are considered 99.9% effective in preventing conception.

In a male, sterilization means removing about an inch of the Vas Deferens on each side of the scrotum. The ends of the tubes are tied or burnt shut. The method does not affect the man’s ability to produce semen, nor does it effect his desire for sex. Instead the semen he produces will no longer contain sperm. The sperm produced by the testicles are reabsorbed by the man’s body. Technically, sterilization in a man is reversible, but in practice the success rate is very low. The longer a man remains sterilized, the less likely it is to be reversible. After a vasectomy, a man is not immediately sterile. It takes 15 to 20 ejaculations before the remaining live sperm in the system is flushed out. Since a vasectomy can be done in a doctor’s office using local anesthetics, the cost of a vasectomy is much lower than tubal ligations.

In the female, the tubes leading from the ovaries to the uterus are tied off or pinched close with a rubber band-like device. The procedure is expensive, requiring abdominal surgery in a hospital. Like the man, the procedure is technically reversible, but in practice it is difficult to achieve. Reversal operations are very expensive with no guarantee of success.

The Speaking Voice

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - John 1:1

An intelligent plain man, untaught in the truths of Christianity, coming upon this text, would likely conclude that John meant to teach that it is the nature of God to speak, to communicate His thoughts to others. And he would be right. A word is a medium by which thoughts are expressed, and the application of the term to the Eternal Son leads us to believe that self-expression is inherent in the Godhead, that God is forever seeking to speak Himself out to His creation. The whole Bible supports the idea. God is speaking. Not God spoke, but God is speaking. He is by His nature continuously articulate. He fills the world with His speaking Voice.

One of the great realities with which we have to deal is the Voice of God in His world. The briefest and only satisfying cosmogony is this: "He spake and it was done." The why of natural law is the living Voice of God immanent in His creation. And this word of God which brought all worlds into being cannot be understood to mean the Bible, for it is not a written or printed word at all, but the expression of the will of God spoken into the structure of all things. This word of God is the breath of God filling the world with living potentiality. The Voice of God is the most powerful force in nature, indeed the only force in nature, for all energy is here only because the power-filled Word is being spoken.

The Bible is the written word of God, and because it is written it is confined and limited by the necessities of ink and paper and leather. The Voice of God, however, is alive and free as the sovereign God is free. "The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." The life is in the speaking words. Gods word in the Bible can have power only because it corresponds to Gods word in the universe. It is the present Voice which makes the written Word all-powerful. Otherwise it would lie locked in slumber within the covers of a book.

We take a low and primitive view of things when we conceive of God at the creation coming into physical contact with things, shaping and fitting and building like a carpenter. The Bible teaches otherwise: "By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. . . . For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast." "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God." Again we must remember that God is referring here not to His written Word, but to His speaking Voice. His world-filling Voice is meant, that Voice which antedates the Bible by uncounted centuries, that Voice which has not been silent since the dawn of creation, but is sounding still throughout the full far reaches of the universe.

The Word of God is quick and powerful. In the beginning He spoke to nothing, and it became something. Chaos heard it and became order; darkness heard it and became light. "And God said - and it was so." These twin phrases, as cause and effect, occur throughout the Genesis story of the creation. The said accounts for the so. The so is the said put into the Continuous present.

That God is here and that He is speaking - these truths are back of all other Bible truths; without them there could be no revelation at all. God did not write a book and send it by messenger to be read at a distance by unaided minds. He spoke a Book and lives in His spoken words, constantly speaking His words and causing the power of them to persist across the years. God breathed on clay and it became a man; He breathes on men and they become clay. "Return ye children of men," was the word spoken at the Fall by which God decreed the death of every man, and no added word has He needed to speak. The sad procession of mankind across the face of the earth from birth to the grave is proof that His original Word was enough.

We have not given sufficient attention to that deep utterance in the Book of John, "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world." Shift the punctuation around as we will and the truth is still there: the Word of God affects the hearts of all men as light in the soul. In the hearts of all men the light shines, the Word sounds, and there is no escaping them. Something like this would of necessity be so if God is alive and in His world. And John says that it is so. Even those persons who have never heard of the Bible have still been preached to with sufficient clarity to remove every excuse from their hearts forever. "Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing Witness, and their thoughts the mean while either accusing or else excusing one another." "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse."

This universal Voice of God was by the ancient Hebrews often called Wisdom, and was said to be everywhere sounding and searching throughout the earth, seeking some response from the Sons of men. The eighth chapter of the Book of Proverbs begins, "Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?" The writer then pictures wisdom as a beautiful woman standing "in the top of the high places, by the way in the places of the paths." She sounds her voice from every quarter so that no one may miss hearing it. "Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of men." Then she pleads for the simple and the foolish to give ear to her words. It is spiritual response for which this Wisdom of God is pleading, a response which she has always sought and is but rarely able to secure. The tragedy is that our eternal welfare depends upon our hearing, and we have trained our ears not to hear.

This universal Voice has ever sounded, and it has often troubled men even when they did not understand the source of their fears. Could it be that this Voice distilling like a living mist upon the hearts of men has been the undiscovered cause of the troubled conscience and the longing for immortality confessed by millions since the dawn of recorded history? We need not fear to face up to this. The speaking Voice is a fact. How men have reacted to it is for any observer to note.

When God spoke out of heaven to our Lord, self-centered men who heard it explained it by natural causes: they said, "It thundered." This habit of explaining the Voice by appeals to natural law is at the very root of modern science. In the living breathing cosmos there is a mysterious Something, too wonderful, too awful for any mind to understand. The believing man does not claim to understand. He falls to his knees and whispers, "God." The man of earth kneels also, but not to worship. He kneels to examine, to search, to find the cause and the how of things. Just now we happen to be living in a secular age. Our thought habits are those of the scientist, not those of the worshipper. We are more likely to explain than to adore. "It thundered," we exclaim, and go our earthly way. But still the Voice sounds and searches. The order and life of the world depend upon that Voice, but men are mostly too busy or too stubborn to give attention.

Every one of us has had experiences which we have not been able to explain: a sudden sense of loneliness, or a feeling of wonder or awe in the face of the universal vastness. Or we have had a fleeting visitation of light like an illumination from some other sun, giving us in a quick flash an assurance that we are from another world, that our origins are divine. What we saw there, or felt, or heard, may have been contrary to all that we had been taught in the schools and at wide variance with all our former beliefs and opinions. We were forced to suspend our acquired doubts while, for a moment, the clouds were rolled back and we saw and heard for ourselves. Explain such things as we will, I think we have not been fair to the facts until we allow at least the possibility that such experiences may arise from the Presence of God in the world and His persistent effort to communicate with mankind. Let us not dismiss such a hypothesis too flippantly.

It is my own belief (and here I shall not feel bad if no one follows me) that every good and beautiful thing which man has produced in the world has been the result of his faulty and sin-blocked response to the creative Voice sounding over the earth. The moral philosophers who dreamed their high dreams of virtue, the religious thinkers who speculated about God and immortality, the poets and artists who created out of common stuff pure and lasting beauty: how can we explain them? It is not enough to say simply, "It was genius." What then is genius? Could it be that a genius is a man haunted by the speaking Voice, laboring and striving like one possessed to achieve ends which he only vaguely understands? That the great man may have missed God in his labors, that he may even have spoken or written against God does not destroy the idea I am advancing. Gods redemptive revelation in the Holy Scriptures is necessary to saving faith and peace with God. Faith in a risen Saviour is necessary if the vague stirrings toward immortality are to bring us to restful and satisfying communion with God. To me this is a plausible explanation of all that is best out of Christ. But you can be a good Christian and not accept my thesis.

The Voice of God is a friendly Voice. No one need fear to listen to it unless he has already made up his mind to resist it. The blood of Jesus has covered not only the human race but all creation as well. "And having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven." We may safely preach a friendly Heaven. The heavens as well as the earth are filled with the good will of Him that dwelt in the bush. The perfect blood of atonement secures this forever.

Whoever will listen will hear the speaking Heaven. This is definitely not the hour when men take kindly to an exhortation to listen, for listening is not today a part of popular religion. We are at the opposite end of the pole from there. Religion has accepted the monstrous heresy that noise, size, activity and bluster make a man dear to God. But we may take heart. To a people caught in the tempest of the last great conflict God says, "Be still, and know that I am God," and still He says it, as if He means to tell us that our strength and safety lie not in noise but in silence.

It is important that we get still to wait on God. And it is best that we get alone, preferably with our Bible outspread before us. Then if we will we may draw near to God and begin to hear Him speak to us in our hearts. I think for the average person the progression will be something like this: First a sound as of a Presence walking in the garden. Then a voice, more intelligible, but still far from clear. Then the happy moment when the Spirit begins to illuminate the Scriptures, and that which had been only a sound, or at best a voice, now becomes an intelligible word, warm and intimate and clear as the word of a dear friend. Then will come life and light, and best of all, ability to see and rest in and embrace Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and All.

The Bible will never be a living Book to us until we are convinced that God is articulate in His universe. To jump from a dead, impersonal world to a dogmatic Bible is too much for most people. They may admit that they should accept the Bible as the Word of God, and they may try to think of it as such, but they find it impossible to believe that the words there on the page are actually for them. A man may say, "These words are addressed to me," and yet in his heart not feel and know that they are. He is the victim of a divided psychology. He tries to think of God as mute everywhere else and vocal only in a book.

I believe that much of our religious unbelief is due to a wrong conception of and a wrong feeling for the Scriptures of Truth. A silent God suddenly began to speak in a book and when the book was finished lapsed back into silence again forever. Now we read the book as the record of what God said when He was for a brief time in a speaking mood. With notions like that in our heads how can we believe? The facts are that God is not silent, has never been silent. It is the nature of God to speak. The second Person of the Holy Trinity is called the Word. The Bible is the inevitable outcome of Gods continuous speech. It is the infallible declaration of His mind for us put into our familiar human words.

I think a new world will arise out of the religious mists when we approach our Bible with the idea that it is not only a book which was once spoken, but a book which is now speaking. The prophets habitually said, "Thus saith the Lord." They meant their hearers to understand that Gods speaking is in the continuous present. We may use the past tense properly to indicate that at a certain time a certain word of God was spoken, but a word of God once spoken continues to be spoken, as a child once born continues to be alive, or a world once created continues to exist. And those are but imperfect illustrations, for children die and worlds burn out, but the Word of our God endureth forever.

If you would follow on to know the Lord, come at once to the open Bible expecting it to speak to you. Do not come with the notion that it is a thing which you may push around at your convenience. It is more than a thing; it is a voice, a word, the very Word of the living God.

Lord, teach me to listen. The times are noisy and my ears are weary with the thousand raucous sounds which continuously assault them. Give me the spirit of the boy Samuel when he said to Thee, "Speak, for thy servant heareth." Let me hear Thee speaking in my heart. Let me get used to the sound of Thy Voice, that its tones may be familiar when the sounds of earth die away and the only sound will be the music of Thy speaking Voice. Amen.
